JEFFERSON
Jefferson has many farms but is best known for its takes and ponds and fine fishing, with camps ready and waiting for fishermen. Jefferson Village is at the head of Damariscotta Lake's Great Bay. One half of Clary Lake is in Jefferson, with Dyer Long Pond and Deer Meadow Pond added for good measure. There is much for the sportsman to do in the fall. Visitors should not miss the drive up Haskell Mountain to the picnic area and Lookout Tower where there is a superb view. This old farming community was settled in 1770 and it remains a beautiful and serene area of rural Maine. The Cattle Pound (on Route 126) is a 40 foot circular stone enclosure to impound stray farm animals. The structure was built in 1829.
