BREMEN

Bremen, incorporated February 19, 1828 and first called Broad Cove, ties on the west bank of the Medomak River, and is bounded by Waldoboro on the northeast, Damariscotta on the west, and Bristol to the south. Bremen also includes the villages of Broad Bay, Medomak and Muscongus. There are two main islands, the first being Bremen Long island, which in 1880 had a year round population of 143. South of Bremen Long Island is Hog Island, now owned by the National Audubon Society, and was a gift from Dr. Millicent Todd Bingham and Dr. James M. Todd, in honor of Mable Loomis Todd. In 1936 the Todd Wildlife Sanctuary was opened as a nature camp to the public so all could enjoy the many species of wildlife and plants. Every summer teachers and students of wildlife visit the area. Deer and moose can be found as you explore the country roads where you will definitely feel the magic of the Maine woods.
